Journalist based in New York City.

Who I am

Hi! I’m Susanna Vogel, a journalist based in New York City, currently writing and editing stories at Healthcare Dive. I primarily cover hospitals and labor issues, however, I also am interested in stories about how private equity investment is impacting the industry. You may have found me through my past reporting at HR Brew, where I reported on labor law, equity and inclusion, and tech.

Background

I have a bachelor’s in Psychology from Davidson College. Before becoming a journalist, I worked in a mix of academic and public policy research positions and as an HR risk consultant. In research roles, I used data analysis to study topics ranging from the science of effective business negotiation to the efficacy of SSA disability programs. As a consultant, I gained expertise in employment processes and the laws that govern them and worked with companies to reach their DE&I and compliance goals.

Prior to joining Healthcare Dive, I worked for Morning Brew as a founding reporter of HR Brew, where I helped build the brand from zero to over 135,000 subscribers. In that role, I covered breaking news—including the controversies and confusion over Covid-19 protocols, how businesses reacted to the onset of war in Ukraine, and the workplace implications of 2022’s monkeypox outbreak—as well as the latest employment trends. My work ranges from short analysis to company profiles.

Currently, I’m the associate editor at Healthcare Dive. I report quick turn pieces, day-two stories, and features, as well as edit pieces of similar lengths. I also run our vertical’s social media and manage the newsletter send process as needed.

I’m known for my ability to break down complex topics (e.g., conflicting jobs data, new employment regulations) into concise, digestible explainers. In particular, I built up expertise related to macro economic indicators, anti-discrimination labor law, pay transparency, and the ongoing efforts to regulate AI. Check out some of my favorite pieces here.

Work with me
